We all know that driving can be stressful, tiring work. But there are many ways to help relieve the pressures and reduce the health impact of regular driving. In this article you’ll find some essential driver tips for staying happy and healthy on the road.
Eat well
It might not be the first thing that springs to mind, but a healthy diet is really important for setting up your body and mind to deal with stress, fatigue and loss of concentration, all of which can seriously impact driving.
Drink well
Caffeine, sugar, sweeteners, preservatives – the drinks many of us rely on to get through the day are stuffed with chemicals and calories that are doing us no good in the long run. Try to cut back on coffee and tea, dial down the energy drinks and avoid all that fizzy pop.
Instead, go back to basics with good old-fashioned water (flavoured with squash if you really can’t drink it plain). Water is essential for all functions of the body and brain, so ensuring a plentiful supply throughout the day helps you retain focus and wellbeing.
Sit well
Bad posture in the driving seat can be the root of many problems, including headaches, tight shoulders, lower back pain and sciatica. Slouching is bad for you; one way to avoid this hunched position is to raise the seat as high as is comfortable.
The chair should be the right distance from the foot pedals. You can judge this with the following rule of thumb: the knees should be bent at 120-135°. Lumbar support is also key – using a pillow or rolled up towel can help to support the curve of your back.
See well
Having perfect vision when driving is crucial. Regular eye tests are a must for anyone regularly spending time behind the wheel.
Driving around without glasses (if needed) or with an out-of-date prescription can contribute to headaches and visual strain, to say nothing of endangering both the driver and other road users.
Rest well
Tiredness is a killer, so take a break. We’ve all seen the roadside warnings, but how many of us heed them? Taking regular rest stops is vital to refresh and reduce fatigue.
Being seated for hours on end takes its toll, so stretch and move around as much as you can throughout the day, taking regular opportunities to get out and stretch your legs and arms.
