The Road Ahead – your future plans revealed

White vans against a blue sky

We asked you and other UK businesses about your future plans for vehicle upgrades and more. Thanks to your responses, we discovered some really interesting insights on how companies are moving ahead - here they are.

More than half of you are planning at least one new vehicle this year

When we asked ‘When are you likely to upgrade or add a new vehicle to your business?’ 54% of you said this would be within the next 12 months. In fact, almost 1 in 4 (23%) are set to make the addition or replacement within the next month. A further 23% are planning to wait a year before adding a new vehicle, but no later than two years from now.

These plans are most likely to include just one vehicle, which is what 85% of you told us when asked ‘How many vehicles are you likely to upgrade or add?’ The other 15% of businesses ranged from planning two new vehicles all the way up to 20 and more.

Replacing unreliable vehicles is the number one reason

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a current vehicle ‘No longer reliable/running well’ was the most popular option selected for why a new vehicle was planned. This was closely followed by the impending expiry of a leasing contract (23%).

Inevitably, ‘Compliance with regulations’ including clean air and emissions standards was a significant factor reported by 15% of businesses surveyed. The same proportion indicated that new vehicle requirements were due to growth of the business.

Big is big – large vans and large cars are most popular future choices

Vans were the most planned vehicle type, on the cards for 58% of businesses in the survey. This figure includes the 43% planning to add at least one large van. ‘Large car’ was in the plans for 27% of respondents, while 8% are preparing to acquire a small truck.

Diesel isn’t dead, but hybrid is here to stay

Just under seven in ten of the businesses in our survey say their next vehicle or vehicles will be fuelled by diesel. It seems that, despite recent complications and controversies concerning the fuel’s emissions impact, it continues to be the most popular choice for companies operating business vehicles.

However, a significant minority (30%) are planning to opt for a hybrid option next time, proving that the new technology is having an influence on key decision-makers at British businesses.
