For businesses operating fleets of vehicles, fuel cards can be a useful tool for managing costs and tracking performance. But with the different fuel cards available, it can be difficult to determine which is the best suited to your needs. To help you navigate the world of fuel cards, we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions.. To give you all the information you need to make the right decision about which fuel card to use – we’ll explain what fuel cards are, how they work, the advantages and disadvantages.
What is a fuel card?
A fuel card is a type of credit card that can be used to purchase petrol, diesel, and other automotive-related expenses. The fuel card will be linked to a selection of participating petrol stations, where drivers can refuel using it. For example, to help businesses save money, the network of participating petrol stations may be limited to more affordable fuel options. Certain cards may also offer rewards, points or cash back on petrol purchases.
What are the benefits of using a fuel card?
There are many benefits to using a fuel card. They give you the ability to track and manage your fuel expenses and save money with low-cost fuel. Fuel cards can also help you save time and resources by simplifying the refuelling process. That means you’ll have more time to focus on other areas of your business.
How do fuel cards work?
Fuel cards work by allowing you to pre-purchase petrol or diesel fuel. They work like any other credit card so when drivers use one at a participating petrol station, they simply swipe the card at the pump or pay with the cashier inside the petrol station. The card covers the total cost of the fuel, which eliminates the need for after-the-fact expenses. Fuel cards can be used as often as you like, and can be reloaded with additional funds when needed.
Can I receive a fuelGenie card for personal use?

What price do I pay for any fuel used?
While refuelling, you only pay the pump price displayed on the forecourt. This ensures you always receive fuel at a reasonable, transparent price (without hidden fees or surcharges). This applies to both fuelGenie and fuelGenie+ fuel cards.
Are there any set-up fees, running costs or transaction charges?
The original free fuelGenie card has absolutely no set-up costs, ongoing expenses, card or transaction fees. You will only be charged for the fuel you use.
fuelGenie+ cards include a small monthly card fee of just 50p/month per card but you can still enjoy no hidden transaction fees, surcharges or additional costs.
Is supermarket fuel quality different to other fuel retailers?
No, supermarket fuel is not lesser-quality. All fuel comes from the same refineries, no matter where you fill-up. All fuel sold in supermarkets complies with strict industry requirements.
Are fuelGenie cards linked to a driver or vehicle?
fuelGenie cards can be linked either to a specific driver or a registered company vehicle. Which method you go for depends on what suits your business – if you have regular drivers who need their own card or a variety of drivers using one car or van.
When choosing a fuel card, it’s important to consider which type of fuel you use most often and where you typically purchase it. Make your decision by comparing the fuelGenie cards to see which one offers the right network of petrol stations – supermarket or supermarket plus some Shell stations – and benefits for you.
Can I collect supermarket loyalty points in conjunction with fuelGenie?
Yes, when you fill up with a fuelGenie card you can collect supermarket loyalty points. This is one of the best benefits, as any fuel expenditure leads to additional points for the driver to use in the future. All driver’s need to do is sign-up to each supermarket loyalty scheme to benefit.
